The Fear of Change.
“We choose to go to the moon… and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard…”- John F. Kennedy
I’ll be honest, I was scared out of my adidas’ when I accepted a new PR job last month. And it wasn’t the first time I’ve felt that way. When I switched from being in television and radio news to PR in 2005, I had a ton of fear. Would I be able to make the transition? Could I cut it going from a big city to a smaller city? The second time around now, I was sure of my PR skills, but fearful of making it in “firm PR” as opposed to working at a university.
I’ve learned over the years though that it is fine to be fearful of change. I referenced the late President John F. Kennedy at the top of this post. When JFK made those famous remarks in challenging our space program to put a man on the moon by the end of the 1960s, he knew people would be scared. It was a daunting task. But, we all know how it ended up.
We challenge ourselves to do things that are hard because we want to be better at our jobs and in life. Imagine if everything was easy in life. Where is the challenge there?
Ryan Paugh, one of the brilliant minds behind Brazen Careerist, re-posted my blog entry that was titled, “Haven’t Met You Yet” on the site. He responded in the comments section, saying, “Challenging yourself to do new things (change is hard!) and grow as a professional is what will define your career.”
If you harness that fear and use it to be the best you can be, there is nothing that can stop you. Sometimes the defining moments are in making a change. There are undoubtedly some of you that are entering your last semester of college life. The “real world” is staring you straight in the face as the days tick down to May.
You’re sure to have someone say tell you not to worry, something will come along. You are allowed to be fearful of that change, whethere you are a college student moving to full-time professional or a long-time pro moving to another job. Use it to fuel your drive to succeed.
Change will do you good!
